Omega Chi Omega Chapter had its beginning on April 17, 2015, by Sophia L. Bell Johnson and seven trailblazing members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. They had a vision to form a graduate chapter in the River Region of Alabama, which is comprised of the cities of Montgomery, Prattville, and Pike Road. At this historic meeting, the members present were Scherrie Banks, DeNitta Easterling, Yolanda Gracie, Sophia L. Bell Johnson, Mary Ann Johnson-Pitts, Ann Carol Sippial, Brandi Jones, and Nisha Woody.

As more sorority members became aware of the intentions of these women, the small group of eight evolved into a group of 50 and were known as The River Region Pearls Interest Group. At the time of the chartering 48 members remained and went on to become the original members of this historic chapter.

Omega Chi Omega Chapter was chartered on December 16, 2017, in Montgomery, Alabama by Mrs. Mary B. Conner, 25th South Eastern Regional Director, 2014 – 2018 and assisted by Mrs. Jo Celeste Pettway, 21st South Eastern Regional Director, 1998-2002.  On January 4, 2018, the newly chartered chapter held its first meeting with President Sophia L. Bell Johnson (2018-2021) emphasizing that the “real work begins now.”

As the work of the chapter began, committees were established and ways to implement the sorority’s programs and targets were underway. The chapter participated in collecting backpacks and donations in support of HBCUs; implemented health awareness programs by conducting activities related to heart health and breast cancer awareness; supported community programs such as Stuff the Truck Food Drive and Brown Bag Bus to promote family strengthening; and implemented chapter activities to promote the collection of shoes and eyeglasses and the making of pillowcase dresses.
